Introduction of CO2 emission classes makes tolls more expensive

Toll doubling from December 1, 2023

With the introduction of the partial toll rate for CO2 emissions from December 2023, the federal government is likely to increase the toll again after just 11 months and expects additional revenue of €7.62 billion per year. This represents almost a doubling of the toll. The federal government is fully exploiting the maximum price of 200€ per ton of CO2 emitted under EU law.

By switching from Zgg (allowable total weight) on the TzGM (technically permissible maximum mass), “scanned” vehicles are also subject to tolls or classified in a higher axle and weight class.

The parliamentary approval and announcement is only scheduled for the end of October/ beginning of November. A further increase in toll costs of around 15% from July 1, 2024, by lowering the weight limit from 7.5 to 3.5 t, has also already been decided.
