Lithium-ion batteries are booming. But where to put the waste batteries?

The e.punkt network: from packaging to transport to recycling

Emons co-founder of the e.punkt waste management network

Lithium-ion batteries are essential in numerous applications, from motor vehicles to mobile devices to e-bikes and energy storage devices.

Almost anyone can and may transport new lithium-ion batteries. But what should you do when the end of life comes, the battery is defective or is recalled? In these cases, e.punkt comes into play and covers the entire battery disposal chain from packaging to transportation to recycling. e.punkt was founded by the LOGEX waste management network, logistician Emons, and recycling companies RE.LION.BAT. and STENA Recycling. All steps that a lithium-ion battery goes through from the point of origin to black mass are coordinated with the association of partners and their core competencies to ensure professional and environmentally friendly disposal.

e.punkt organizes professional and environmentally friendly disposal. The tasks are clearly distributed: Everyone does what they do best. That is one of the guidelines among the founders. Emons is the first logistician to maintain a container pool for transporting critical batteries. Within 24 hours, the appropriate container can be made available at the disposal point via the Emons general cargo network. The packaged batteries are then safely transported — as a first step across Germany — to the Discharging & Dismantling Centers. There, the waste batteries are discharged and dismantled, significantly reducing the risk of fire posed by the batteries. Subsequent recycling produces the so-called black mass with valuable raw materials, which are returned to the cycle. A major advantage for customers is that batteries are moved over shorter distances in the partner network. This saves time, emissions and transport costs.

Lukas Fast, authorized sales representative at Logex, summarizes: “The e.punkt network enables partners to concentrate on their core competencies. Germany-wide logistics and a smart container pool create efficiencies that were previously not available. ”

“e.punkt offers customers the option of working with just one supplier for the nationwide disposal of lithium-ion batteries, which is an efficient alternative to a 1:1 relationship with several disposal companies. By limiting ourselves to the logistically sensible catchment area of our companies, e.punkt also increases our local capacity utilization,” says Arne Seeger, managing director of Stena Recycling.

“The future of e-mobility starts with a sustainable battery cycle. The transportation of hazardous and non-hazardous battery waste requires extensive permits and reliable personnel with in-depth knowledge,” adds Enrico Hermanny, division manager of Emons | Battery.

e.punkt with founders LOGEX, RE.LION.BAT, STENA Recycling and the Emons | Battery division has mastered this challenge. High quality standards, responsibility and safety in dealing with battery waste are the focus of all players.
