Self-generated electricity at Emons: How we supply our sites with solar power and save CO₂

The sun is shining and the meter is turning at Emons: At more and more Emons locations, we generate our own electricity. What sounds like a simple sustainability measure is in fact a well-thought-out component of our energy and climate strategy. With our own electricity production, we cover a significant portion of our electricity requirements, reduce emissions and strengthen our independence from external energy suppliers — an important aspect in times of rising energy costs and volatile markets.

Production, consumption and feed-in: The figures for 2025

In 2025, we generated around 818 MWh of electricity from photovoltaic systems at our sites in Kenzingen, Cologne, Gengenbach, Thurnau and in future also in Uhrsleben.

Compared to 2024, we thus produced around 50 MWh more of our own electricity and were able to save almost 3 tons of additional CO₂ at the same time.

We used over 307 MWh of the generated energy directly for our own needs, in particular for:

‍

• the operation of our shipping and logistics facilities

• charging our e-vehicles at company-owned charging stations

• our digital infrastructures at the locations

Since in-house electricity production depends on the weather, electricity demand could not be completely covered by our own generation at all times. In low-sun months, external green electricity was also required.

In the sunny months, on the other hand, we fed excess energy into the public grid: In 2025, over 510 MWh flowed back into the general power grid.

CO₂ savings: over 100 tons per year

‍

By using self-generated solar power, we were able to save over 105 tons of CO₂. This saving relates exclusively to self-used electricity and represents a measurable contribution to climate protection.

An example:

The Thurnau site alone saved over 36.6 tons of CO₂ exclusively through the use of PV power in its own operation.

Conclusion: Sustainable logistics requires smart energy

Our investments in our own electricity production pay off in several ways: ecologically, economically and operationally. It is clear to us that the future of logistics will not only be digital, it will also be electric. And we are making the foundations for this visible today.
